Meet the Implant Removal and Replacement Team

The Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital is staffed by four consultants working inside a tertiary general hospital. Tongchun Mao, MD, is responsible for the medical review of this site and assesses what the breast will look like once a device is removed. A comparison of this kind also involves the other three: the surgical view of a breast that needs theatre-level management, the assessment of the skin that has to settle without a device, and the dermatological care of a delayed reaction.

Tongchun Mao

Tongchun Mao (毛彤春)

Deputy Director & Head of Aesthetic Surgery · Vice Chief Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending · Lead Physician of This Site

Breast implant surgery · capsule and revision work · shape assessment

Dr. Tongchun Mao is an aesthetic surgeon at Chongqing West District Hospital, where he is Deputy Director and Head of Aesthetic Surgery in its Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center and the responsible physician for this site. He personally performs more than 700 operations a year, within hospital standards of assessment, anaesthesia and follow-up.

Both decisions in this comparison arrive at the same consultation, and Dr. Mao treats them as different decisions rather than as a smaller and a larger version of one operation. His part of the decision is the tissue: how the skin has stretched, how the breast sits on the chest wall, whether the capsule needs work, and whether a lift is required either way. He does not treat removal as a failure or as a step towards a replacement, and he does not present a replacement as the way to keep a result. Where a patient wants the device out, he says plainly what the shape is likely to be afterwards, including when that is not what the patient is hoping to hear.

Clinical focus

  • Assessment of what the breast will look like once a device is removed
  • Capsule assessment and capsule work planned before the operation
  • Recognition when a lift is required, with either decision
  • Assessment of a breast that has already been operated on more than once
  • Reporting and investigation of a change found in a breast with an implant

Two decisions, one consequence to understand

Removal without replacement means accepting the shape the tissue settles into, which is usually not the shape the breast had before the first operation. Replacement keeps a device and its open questions. Neither is a failure, and neither is a default.

Shaoliang Wang

Shaoliang Wang (王韶亮)

Director, Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center · Vice Chief Physician, Associate Professor, Doctor of Medicine

Plastic surgery · complex cases · revision

Dr. Shaoliang Wang is Director of the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital. Within the team he provides the surgical perspective and the tertiary-hospital backstop — the assessment when an operation is the honest answer, and the hospital-level care for the rare complication that needs it.

On this site Dr. Wang is the second opinion for a breast that has already had several operations, and for the patient whose finding needs to be investigated before anything is planned.

Clinical focus

  • Center leadership and multidisciplinary case review
  • Surgical assessment when an operation is the honest answer to descent or excess skin
  • Hospital-based care for the rare complication that needs theatre-level management
Ke He

Ke He (何锞)

Deputy Director & Head of Skin & Laser Aesthetics · Attending Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending

Non-surgical assessment · skin and soft tissue

Dr. Ke He is Deputy Director and head of skin and laser aesthetics within the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital. Within the team her role is the device and injectable assessment, and the honest referral when a problem needs an operation rather than a needle.

Her part of the decision is the state of the skin over the breast: whether it has the elasticity to settle well without a device, and whether a finding in the skin needs treatment before an operation.

Clinical focus

  • Device and injectable assessment before any treatment plan
  • Staged planning judged against standardised photographs
  • Honest referral when a problem needs an operation rather than a needle
Yongbo Jia

Yongbo Jia (贾勇波)

Deputy Director & Head of Dermatology · Vice Chief Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending

Dermatology · skin disease and delayed reactions

Dr. Yongbo Jia is a dermatologist within the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital. Within the team his role is medical skin assessment — diagnosing and managing pigment and barrier conditions, and treating skin that a device or an injection has irritated.

A rash, a change in skin colour or a reaction appearing around a scar is assessed dermatologically first at this hospital, because not every late change is caused by the implant.

Clinical focus

  • Medical skin assessment behind injectable treatment plans
  • Diagnosis and management of pigment and barrier conditions
  • Dermatologic care of skin after irritation or a delayed reaction

Start with an assessment, not a decision

Arrange an assessment. It establishes what your own tissue contributes and what each decision would leave behind, and we will explain both plainly before anything is planned.
